Update Aug. 2010

Please note due to stricter criteria at the paper mills we cannot accept plastic of any kind, in even the smallest quantities. Items such as plastic laminated brochures, junk mail with plastic wrapper still on, clear plastic dividers/folders all such items will be notified and returned to your company.

Confidential Shredding

The British Security Industry Association recently warned that although 150,000 tonnes of paper waste is sent for destruction annually, this is only a small proportion of truly confidential waste.

It highlighted the possibility of fines of up to £5000 by the Data Commissioner for slip-ups in maintaining confidentiality.

Our service - Paper waste handled by Waste Chasers as part of our standard recycling service is unlikely to escape during the handling process, and is certainly less available to misuse than if sat in a bin outside your premises. But to really cover yourselves in cases of confidentiality, we recommend you use our confidential shredding service. We supply sacks identifying the waste as confidential, and plastic seals - or use your own bags or boxes if you prefer. Then we collect - and if you have more than ten sacks or equivalent there is no collection fee. We open up the sacks and shred the paper at our premises, ensuring their contents are no longer legible before sending the shreds off with other paper for recycling.

No compromise to security, no compromise to the environment.

Fluorescent Tubes...

We no longer collect fluorescent tubes, if you wish to dispose of tubes they are now classed as hazardous waste and must be disposed of in a certain way to comply with the law. Contact Manchester Waste Recycling on 0161 736 3636 for a container that they will remove when full. Or Mercury Recycling on 0161 877 0977 both of these companies specialize in tube recycling.

Waste Transfer Forms...

If you haven't done it already, please can you send back half of your completed Waste Transfer forms? It's YOU, not us, that the Environment Agency would be interested in if it became apparent that the paperwork for your waste collections wasn't complete! So sign and return them soon!

  • "What area does Waste Chasers cover…?"

This information could be useful to you if your organisation has other branches in West Yorkshire who also want to recycle. Pass on our details if you feel they may be relevant, or ask us to approach a named contact and we'll do the rest…. We cover ~ Bradford District including Shipley and Keighley. Most Halifax and Huddersfield postcodes. Central and West Leeds, Skipton and a few northwestern Wakefield postcodes We will travel beyond this area for large jobs, particularly large clearouts of confidential waste.

(For areas we don't cover, try contacting the Community Recycling Network for details of other recycling groups on 0117 942 0142.)

Here's a reminder list of types of paper waste which ought to go in with your mixed paper (chargeable @ £1 per sack because we have to pay to have it taken away and recycled), but which commonly find their way into office paper, necessitating hand-sorting and bringing down efficiency:

envelopes, photocopy wrappers, cardboard, folders, phone books, all things glued/card/manila.

In a recent report by BackCare...

The Forum of Private Business and the TUC, it was calculated that small businesses lose 13m working days to back trouble each year. Lately we at Waste Chasers have, despite efforts to moderate the strain of the physical work we do, been suffering from back troubles ourselves. In fact all but one of us have been seriously incapacitated by strain in the last few weeks. Please do your bit to ensure that no damage is done to the health of our staff - or that of the members of your staff who handle waste, bearing in mind your legal responsibility for their health at work - as follows: Make sure that sacks are light enough to lift and carry for some distance - if you have any trouble please spread the weight across more sacks. Or weigh the sacks and ensure they are fifteen kilos or less. Ring us if you are short of sacks. And be prepared for too-heavy sacks to be left behind! For more info on safeguarding the mobility of our staff and yours ring the Health and Safety Executive Infoline on 08701 545500.
